Celebrating Success: Portland’s New Qualified Disability Support Workers

A group of newly qualified Disability Support Workers from Portland has recently completed their Certificate III in Individual Support/Disability, marking a major milestone in their professional journeys. Over the past 12 months, these learners have immersed themselves in the disability sector, gaining not only the necessary skills and knowledge but also valuable connections with their peers and trainers.
Throughout their training, the group attended weekly classes, where they learned about all aspects of the disability industry, from in-home care to working with children, teens, adults, and providing respite care. This hands-on learning environment, guided by Suzanne Roll, their passionate and experienced Trainer & Assessor, allowed them to build confidence and enhance their understanding of how to provide high-quality care.
As part of their training, the learners completed work experience placements with respected local support services such as Rise Support Services, Scope, We Support You Support Services, and Southern Stay. These placements not only provided them with practical experience but also led to immediate employment opportunities in the disability sector, where each learner now works in a role they enjoy and feel passionate about.
“The knowledge that you gain from being in the classroom with a trainer who is passionate, and a wealth of knowledge is invaluable. Our trainer is real, approachable, and happy to help with any questions we have while working in the industry,” one learner shared. Another added, “I love how working in Disability makes me feel, it gives me satisfaction knowing that I am making a difference.”
The positive impact of their training is evident in the new confidence these workers now have as they support people with diverse disabilities. The group’s dedication to their personal and professional growth has not only enriched their lives but also the lives of those they support in their communities.
These learners’ stories are a testament to the power of education and training in opening doors to meaningful careers. As they embark on this new path, they are committed to providing high-quality support, building meaningful relationships with clients, and adding value to the lives of the people they care for.
We look forward to seeing how this group continues to thrive in the disability industry, and we proudly congratulate them on their achievements!
