Kathryn’s Mental Health Journey to Employment: A Story of Strength

When Kathryn joined are-able in October 2024, she was emerging from a challenging mental health journey, supported by the Wellbeing Mental Health Local Hub in Mildura. While eager to work, she lacked confidence and direction. With a Diploma of Community Services, she knew she wanted to help others but needed support to take the next step.
From the moment are-able’s Employment Mentor Reney Hutchins met Kathryn, she saw her potential. “I immediately noticed her vibrant and compassionate personality. It was a pleasure working alongside her, and I feel truly privileged to have been part of her journey into this employment opportunity,” Reney shared. She, along with Employment Consultant Leith Williams, worked closely with Kathryn to build her confidence. They helped renew her Working with Children’s Check, NDIS Check, and First Aid Certificate, while also assisting with her resume and cover letter.
Recognising her strengths, Reney and Leith introduced Kathryn to WeKare Disability Support Group Pty Ltd, where employer Nick Staker saw her passion and personal journey as assets to his team. Kathryn secured a role as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA), starting with eight hours a week. “After a few sessions, we identified her strengths and matched her with one of our supportive employers, WeKare. Kathryn is now reaching her 13-week milestone and working up to 30 hours per week. Her dedication to maintaining employment has been incredible, and we are so proud to see her excel in her journey,” Leith reflected.
Kathryn’s transformation has been inspiring. She is now happier, more confident, and thriving in her role. Her mental health has significantly improved, and she approaches her work with renewed energy. “Kathryn has earned everything through her hard work, and I’m excited to see her become an independent worker and accomplish all her goals,” Reney added.
Her story highlights the power of tailored support and meaningful employment in transforming lives. are-able is proud to have been part of her journey and looks forward to seeing her continue to make a difference.
