From Back Surgery to Portland Swim Star: Jacob’s Inspiring Journey to Employment

When 20-year-old Jacob Travers first joined the Transition to Work (TTW) program at are-able in Portland, he was facing significant challenges. Fresh out of recovery from back surgery in 2023 to correct spinal issues, Jacob was in the early stages of recovery. Walking left him drained, and he was unsure about his future capabilities.
With the support of Employment Mentor Nikayla Smith, Jacob began rebuilding his confidence. He participated in water therapy and physical rehabilitation to strengthen his endurance and joined a literacy class with are-able Training. This not only helped him physically but also prepared him for longer periods of focus and interaction in a work environment.
In a testament to his determination and resilience, Jacob secured a position as a swim teacher with Belgravia, Portland’s Leisure and Aquatic Centre. Despite initial nerves, Jacob quickly found his stride, supported by Nikayla, who ensured he was equipped with the right training and gear for the role. His positive attitude and infectious laughter made an immediate impact on his team. Just three months into the job, Jacob was honoured as “Employee of the Month,” a reflection of the respect and admiration he has earned.
“Jacob’s transformation has been remarkable,” said Nikayla. “From someone who doubted his abilities to an enthusiastic and dedicated team member, Jacob has grown immensely. Seeing him thrive in his role and rediscover his confidence has been incredibly rewarding.”
Employment has been transformative for Jacob. Regular time in the water has vastly improved his health, eliminating the need for physical therapy. His endurance has tripled, and he’s even taken up gym workouts before his shifts.
“Working with Nikayla to find my place in this world has been eye-opening and helped me grow as a person,” Jacob shared.
Jacob’s journey showcases the power of resilience, the right support, and the opportunities created through are-able’s TTW program. From facing physical and emotional hurdles to thriving in his role and inspiring those around him, Jacob is a shining example of what’s possible with determination and guidance.
Congratulations, Jacob, on your incredible achievements! We’re proud to have been a part of your journey and can’t wait to see what’s next.
