Adrian’s Journey to Employment: From Aspiration to Achievement

Adrian’s Journey to Employment: From Aspiration to Achievement

In February 2023, Adrian Carter, a 21-year-old Mildura resident with Autism, Epilepsy, and an intellectual disability, embarked on his journey with are-able’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program. His initial interests were rooted in the childcare industry, inspired by his mother’s career and his school-based work experience. However, as he explored his passions, Adrian discovered a keen interest in the retail sector.

Over the months, Adrian actively participated in group sessions, social events, and weekly one-on-one mentoring. Under the guidance of his Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultant (EPEC), Ashley Chambers, he developed critical skills such as communication, problem-solving, and independence. Together, they worked on interview preparation, resume building, and mock interview sessions, laying the groundwork for Adrian’s future success.

Adrian’s determination led him to a pivotal moment—securing a Christmas casual position at The Reject Shop in Mildura. His role involves operating cash registers and assisting customers, tasks he approaches with enthusiasm and dedication. Adrian’s excellent performance and reliability have not gone unnoticed, as he’s been repeatedly called in to cover shifts, showcasing his growing work ethic.

Ashley reflects on Adrian’s journey:

“Adrian has always been motivated to work. It wasn’t easy to find the right opportunity, but his determination never wavered. Seeing him thrive in his role is incredibly rewarding and a testament to the hard work we’ve both put in to achieve his goal.”

Gaining employment has transformed Adrian’s life, providing him with structure, independence, and a sense of purpose. He enjoys earning his own money and values the routine his job brings. His success has also led him to transition to the DES program, where he continues to receive support while thriving in his role at The Reject Shop.
