Isabella’s Journey to Confidence and Employment Success

In March 2024, 19-year-old Isabella Walker joined the are-able School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program in Mildura with the goal of building her confidence and reducing the anxiety that had previously been a barrier to her employment. Diagnosed with Autism and anxiety, Isabella initially set her sights on finding work in a bookshop or library. Over time, her confidence grew, and so did her aspirations, as she began exploring opportunities in retail and customer service.
Graduating from Indie College after struggling in a mainstream school environment, Isabella approached the SLES program with determination. Despite starting out shy and nervous, she actively participated in social events, industry tours, and Access at a Glance sessions. Even when her anxiety threatened to take over, Isabella consistently pushed through, displaying remarkable resilience and commitment.
With support from her Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultant (EPEC), Ashley Chambers, Isabella practiced mock interviews, developed a strong resume, and directly approached employers to seek work experience and employment opportunities. While facing rejection at times, Isabella’s motivation never wavered. Her perseverance paid off when she secured a Christmas casual role at BCF Mildura (Boating, Camping, Fishing).
In her role, Isabella takes on a variety of responsibilities, including customer service, stacking shelves, unpacking pallets, and cash register operations. Recognising the need to manage her anxiety at work, Isabella independently communicated with her manager to vary her duties during shifts, ensuring a positive and productive work environment.
Ashley Chambers, her EPEC, reflects on Isabella’s growth:“In the beginning, Isabella was so quiet and shy. Watching her apply herself to building her skills and now seeing her achieve her employment goals has been so rewarding.”
Gaining employment has been transformative for Isabella, providing her with routine, independence, and a sense of accomplishment. Her transition to the DES program ensures she continues to receive the support she needs while thriving in her role at BCF Mildura.
