Finding His Purpose: Josh’s Journey to Employment

Finding His Purpose: Josh’s Journey to Employment

At just 18 years old, Mt Gambier local Josh Hastings has already shown what’s possible when the right mix of support, opportunity, and determination comes together.

When Josh first joined are-able’s NDIS Finding and Keeping a Job program 18 months ago, he wasn’t sure where his future was heading. He entered the program with low confidence and little direction, unsure of how to take those first steps into employment. But what Josh did have was a willingness to learn and a spark that, with the right guidance, could grow into something remarkable.

With encouragement from his mentor team, Josh began to explore his interests, build on his strengths, and develop new skills. Over time, his confidence grew, and so too did his ambition. Josh completed a Certificate II in Cookery at TAFE, an achievement that not only expanded his skillset but also gave him a taste of what he was capable of achieving.

As the months went by, Josh became increasingly engaged in his Finding and Keeping a Job sessions. What stood out to his mentors was how self-motivated he became. No longer waiting to be told what to do, Josh began actively seeking out opportunities for himself. He wanted to work. He wanted independence. And he wanted to contribute.

That opportunity came through are-able’s strong community partnerships. Employment Consultant Matilda Rolley introduced Josh to Fox’s Chook House, a local butcher shop known for welcoming and supporting new talent. Thanks to the pre-existing relationship Matilda had built with the team, the transition into the workplace was seamless.

Josh is now employed as a trainee meat processor, working towards a Certificate II in Meat Processing. It’s a role that challenges him, teaches him new skills, and most importantly, gives him a sense of pride in what he does each day. The team at Fox’s Chook House couldn’t be happier with their newest recruit, saying:

“Our new employee Josh has been amazing.”

For Josh, employment has meant so much more than just a pay cheque. Having his own income has given him greater independence, from managing his own expenses to making choices for himself. It has given him a renewed sense of purpose and self-worth, and this confidence now flows into other parts of his life.

One of the most inspiring outcomes is the way Josh is now giving back to his peers. He returns to FKJ sessions not only as a participant, but as a role model. He shares his story, talks about what work is like, and encourages others to believe in themselves. For many of his peers, seeing someone their own age achieves this milestone has been a powerful motivator to keep pushing forward.

Josh’s story is proof of what can be achieved when young people are given the right tools, guidance, and opportunities. It’s also a reflection of the important role local employers, like Fox’s Chook House, play in shaping futures and creating inclusive communities.

At are-able, we are proud to stand beside Josh on his journey, and even prouder to see where he’s heading next.
