From Perseverance to Purpose: Alisha’s Journey into Early Childhood Education in Horsham

For Alisha Wilson-Purchase, returning to study wasn’t just about gaining a qualification, it was about reclaiming a sense of purpose.
As a single mum of five, Alisha had spent years putting her own aspirations on hold to care for her family. But in July 2023, she decided it was time to follow her passion and enrolled in the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care through are-able Education and Training in Horsham.
“I’ve always loved working with children,” Alisha shared. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember, but life just kept getting in the way.”
The journey was far from easy. Balancing study, parenting, and everyday responsibilities would be a challenge for anyone, but Alisha also faced ongoing mental health struggles and family difficulties during her course. There were moments when finishing seemed impossible.
“Life really wanted me to quit,” she said. “There were times I truly believed I couldn’t keep going.”
But Alisha didn’t give up. With the encouragement of her trainer, Cindy Hammond, and the flexible, understanding approach of the are-able training team, she pushed through, week after week, class after class.
“Even when times got tough, the support I received helped me continue. Cindy was always there with encouragement. When I felt like quitting, she reminded me how close I was to finishing—and I’m 100% grateful she did because I’m now qualified!”
Alisha’s hard work paid off. She recently secured a permanent, full-time position with One Tree Community Services in Horsham, a role that aligns perfectly with her passion for nurturing and educating young children.
Now, with a solid career underway and her confidence restored, Alisha is already planning her next goal: enrolling in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care once her youngest child starts school.
Her trainer, Cindy, couldn’t be prouder.
“Alisha showed incredible strength throughout her studies,” said Cindy Hammond, Trainer and Assessor at are-able. “She faced significant challenges, but never lost sight of her goal. It’s been a privilege to support her through this journey and see her come out the other side more confident, empowered, and ready for the next chapter.”
Alisha hopes her story will inspire others who may be facing tough circumstances.“I’m an open book,” she says. “I want people to know that even when everything feels like it’s against you, you can still make it through. If I can do it, anyone can.”
Her journey is a powerful reminder that education is more than just learning—it’s transformation. And sometimes, the most meaningful successes are the ones hard-earned.
