Kicking Goals: Joshua’s All-Stars Experience Builds Skills and Confidence

In Ballarat, one of are-able’s NDIS participants, Joshua Burgess, recently took a big step toward his future by volunteering at the Freedom Solutions All-Stars Inclusive Community Sports Day. Supported by the are-able Wendouree team as part of his SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) journey, Joshua embraced the opportunity to try something new—and it paid off.

Joshua joined the event with a clear goal: to explore a possible career path by gaining experience in a sports and community services environment. Known for his love of sport and his active nature, this volunteering role was a perfect fit.

The event allowed Joshua to rotate through every station, giving him hands-on experience across a variety of inclusive sporting activities. This flexibility allowed him to not only discover what he enjoyed but also put into practice many of the skills he’s developed during his individual and group sessions with are-able.

“Joshua loves trying new things that he may never have considered before,” said Luke Nimmo, Senior Employment and Preparation Consultant at are-able. “He enjoys learning during his sessions and thrives on social interaction with others. This event gave him the perfect space to grow in both areas.”

Joshua’s participation also highlighted the power of community partnerships. The connection with Freedom Solutions—facilitated by Bec McCaw—provided a unique, supportive environment where Joshua could thrive. It was more than just a sports day; it was a real-world opportunity to build confidence, develop employability skills, and reinforce the value of inclusion.

After the event, Joshua sent a heartfelt message to the Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultants (EPECs), thanking them for their support throughout the day—a touching moment that reflected both his gratitude and the positive impact of the experience.

With his newfound confidence and growing interest in the disability and sport sectors, Joshua is well on his way to building a future full of potential.
