Angela’s Journey: Finding Purpose and Stability Through Employment

Angela, a 65-year-old Ballarat resident, has proven that determination and the right support can lead to life-changing opportunities. Linked with are-able since 2015, Angela had an extensive history in cleaning and administrative roles and was deeply involved in voluntary work, particularly in the animal care sector. Despite her experience, finding stable employment remained a challenge due to barriers such as hearing loss, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and osteoarthritis.

Angela’s journey took a positive turn when she connected with Carolynne Barrow, her Employment Consultant at are-able. Recognising Angela’s willingness to expand her skills, Carolynne encouraged her to explore new career paths. Together, they identified that Angela’s compassionate nature and transferable skills made her a perfect candidate for a support worker role. With this newfound direction, Angela embarked on a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) through Gen U in 2023, requiring 120 hours of work placement to complete the course.

Carolynne’s strong employer connections proved invaluable when she reached out to Calacare, a local NDIS provider, to secure Angela’s placement. Initially, the employer hesitated due to Angela’s hearing impairment, citing health and safety concerns. However, through collaborative problem-solving, Carolynne and Angela identified innovative solutions, including using Skype video conferencing and talk-to-text technology, to effectively communicate on the job. With these adjustments, the employer agreed to give Angela a chance.

Angela’s dedication and strong work ethic quickly became evident. Recognising her potential, Calacare offered Angela paid employment while she continued her placement. However, just as things were falling into place, Angela faced an unexpected setback—she hit a kangaroo, resulting in her car being written off. Concerned about how she would continue working, Angela offered to take on alternative duties that didn’t require driving until she could secure a new vehicle.

Impressed by Angela’s commitment and resilience, Calacare stepped in with an incredible gesture—they provided her with a company car, ensuring she could continue in her role without interruption.

Six months on, Angela has become an integral part of the Calacare team. As an individual support worker, she assists NDIS clients in their homes, offering domestic support, companionship, and transport to appointments. Her role has given her a newfound sense of purpose and stability, allowing her to pay off her house and discover a confidence she never knew she had.

Reflecting on her journey, Angela often says, “I wish I had taken this leap 10 years ago.” Carolynne describes her as “one of the most grounded and determined people I have ever met. No challenge is too big for Angela. She takes everything in her stride and finds a way to overcome it.”

Her employer agrees, stating, “Angela is one of the most valuable employees we have ever had.”

Angela’s story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the power of meaningful employment. Thanks to her unwavering determination and the dedicated support of are-able, she has not only found a job but a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.
