Kally’s Journey: From Unemployment to Empowerment in Mildura
Kally, a 40-year-old woman with an intellectual disability, joined are-able in 2019. With determination and a strong desire to work, she pursued employment to contribute meaningfully to her life and community.
In 2022, Kally was placed in her first job, where she worked diligently for 13 weeks until the cleaning business she was employed by lost its contract. Kally’s role involves various maintenance tasks, including cleaning the pool, mowing the lawn, and general cleaning around the hotel. This role perfectly suits her abilities and has significantly improved her routine, wellbeing, and mental health. Her employer is incredibly supportive, treating Kally with the respect and equality she deserves.
Kally’s employment journey wasn’t without challenges. Her intellectual disability posed certain barriers, but with the passionate support of are-able and her Employment Consultant, Chloe Veit, she overcame them. are-able provided various supports, including fuel and food vouchers, wage subsidies, and even transportation when needed.
