Have you recently received a letter that talks about changes to Disability Employment Services (DES)?

It would have come from the Department of Social Services, outlining that from 1 July, what we know as DES will be undergoing changes.

It’s prompted interest from our clients, wondering how, if at all, it may impact them. Below are some of the questions we’ve received, and the answers we can provide.

Q. Is are-able one of the DES providers closing on 1 July 2018?

No. are-able will continue to service all job seekers in all its current locations – one of the very few providers to do so! So really, it’s little change for you if you’re currently a client.

Q. What do these changes mean to me as an are-able client?

You will continue to receive the same individual support, tailored to help you achieve your employment goals. There will be some improvements designed to help you. Our focus on understanding, respecting, valuing and providing individualised support will remain.

Q. Is there anything I need to do?

In most cases, you will not need to do anything. are-able is working to make sure any DES changes will have little impact on you.

Q. What if I am with a provider that’s closing on 1 July 2018?

You will receive a letter before the end of May from the Department of Social Services. If your DES provider is closing, we can help you transfer to us.

Q. How can I transfer to are-able?

Even if your provider is not closing, you can transfer to us. Call us on 1800 566 066, visit any are-able office, OR contact us here via the website.

Q. Will the changes to DES have any impact on my DHS Centrelink income support?

Changes to DES are not designed to impact on your DHS Centrelink income support. However, you should always discuss any concerns related to income benefits with DHS Centrelink.
