Finding Purpose and Strength: Kate’s Journey to a Fulfilling Career through are-able Parent Pathways Program

At 34 years old, Kate had reached a turning point in her life. With four children ranging from 11 years old down to just one, she was seeking a fresh start—not only for herself, but for her family. In January 2025, she joined the Parent Pathways Program at are-able, bringing with her a desire for something new, a history of personal challenges, and a dream of working in a first response role.
“I never really knew what I wanted to do,” Kate shared. “Growing up I had focused hard to be in first response. But with a young, busy family, the study load seemed too intense. Going to Shenae with my problem was the best decision I made.”
That’s where Shenae Hyder, Parent Pathways Mentor Warrnambool, stepped in. Together, they explored career options, navigated moments of self-doubt, and put a plan into action. Kate was offered a position as a Trainee Prison Officer with the Department of Justice and Community Safety. The move and the career shift were big changes, and the Parent Pathways Program helped make it all possible.
Support included:
- Organising a car service to ensure safe travel to and from work
- Funding First Aid Training to meet employment requirements
- Providing gift cards to help set up her new home
- Linking Kate with local services to improve financial literacy
- Ongoing support to help her balance work, parenting, and personal wellbeing
Kate successfully completed the Initial Pre-Service Training Program and her Certificate III in Correctional Practice, officially securing her permanent role as a Trainee Prison Officer.
“Being a Prison Officer is the best decision I made. It has something new to face each day, amazing people to work with, and it’s challenging in the right ways,” Kate said.
The impact of employment has been deeply felt in Kate’s life. Financial relief has reduced daily stress, and the stability of a full-time job has allowed her to better manage family responsibilities. Most importantly, it has reignited her sense of purpose and opened the door to new ambitions.
“Kate’s doing such a fantastic job settling into her new role,” said Shenae. “She’s excelling in her studies and managing the ups and downs of parenthood with incredible grace—you can really see how much she’s thriving!”
Kate’s story is a powerful example of what’s possible with the right support at the right time. Her new chapter is one of resilience, renewal, and opportunity.
