Celebrating Helen Ryan – 30+ Years of Friendship, Dedication, and Joy at Social Enterprises

After more than three decades as a cherished Supported Employee, Helen Ryan – fondly known as “H” – has officially retired from are-able’s Social Enterprises. Over the past year, Helen continued to brighten our days by participating in our Centre-Based Activities at Artlink, Craft, and Cooking.

Helen’s journey with are-able began over 30 years ago, and in that time, she became a beloved member of our Social Enterprises family in Warrnambool. From her work in Steam and Clean to the Herb and Gardening crew, and most recently at Create and Collate, Helen brought positivity, warmth, and a willingness to lend a hand wherever needed. She formed lifelong friendships and always greeted everyone with her infectious smile.

Sadly, in recent months, Helen’s health has deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. With the support of her amazing care team, Karla and Kate, Helen is now stepping away from the activities she loved to focus on her wellbeing.

Susan Hill, NDIS Programs Participant Service Manager – Employment, shared:

“Helen has been an inspiration to all of us at Social Enterprises. Her dedication, positive spirit, and kindness made a lasting impact on everyone she met. It has been a privilege to watch her grow and form such strong friendships over the years. We wish Helen all the best as she focuses on her health, and she will always have a special place in our hearts here at are-able.”

To us, Helen has been more than a colleague – she has been a true friend and a shining example of resilience and kindness. As we say goodbye to seeing her each week, we remember the many moments of laughter and connection she shared with all of us.

As Helen always showed through her actions:

“We will not be defined by our disabilities, but our capabilities.”

Helen, thank you for your incredible contributions, your friendship, and the joy you brought to are-able. You will always be part of our family.
