Connecting Local Parents: are-able Supports Under 2 Crew in Mildura and Red Cliffs

The Under 2 Crew initiative, born from a recognised need for support among parents of multiple children, has quickly become a vital community hub in Mildura and Red Cliffs.

Samantha Dodds from Mallee Accommodation & Support Program and Natalia Foote from Mildura Rural City Council identified a gap in services for parents beyond their first child, who often lack dedicated support networks. When Reney Hutchins, one of our Parent Pathways Mentors in Mildura, saw the concept advertised, she immediately reached out to offer are-able’s support and contribute to its delivery, recognising the immense potential for local families.

The first session in Red Cliffs in February 2026 quickly confirmed the strong demand for such a space, attracting numerous parents and children. This success led to the expansion of Under 2 Crew to Mildura, with Krystle Staker from De Garis Kindergarten’s Committee  playing a key role in establishing a second location. After a meeting with De Garis Kindergarten’s Director Chelsea Brougham, we had their full support. De Garis Kindergarten, along with generous donations from Sunraysia Bread and Butter Bakery and Red Cliffs Bakery, provides essential support like refreshments, fostering a welcoming environment. These community partnerships are crucial in ensuring parents have a safe, engaging, and non-judgemental place to connect, share experiences, and build friendships. We are also pleased to share that sessions are now being organised in Merbein, further extending this valuable support.

The impact of Under 2 Crew extends beyond social connection, offering a lifeline to families in need. We recall one mother who, facing significant financial hardship and uncertainty, found support through the network. The team connected her with emergency assistance, a food voucher, and local support services. Through our Parent Pathways program, she also received help accessing Services Australia payments and navigating documentation. This is just one powerful example of how creating strong community connections helps parents access crucial support precisely when they need it most, enabling them to build confidence and stability for their families.

We are incredibly proud to be part of this growing initiative, helping to create opportunities and build stronger, more connected communities for parents and their children.
