Dominic’s Journey: From Overcoming Adversity to Chasing Olympic Dreams

We are incredibly proud to walk alongside people like Dominic Barnett, a young man whose journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and the power of unwavering support. Dominic, who is part of our Transition to Work program in Hamilton, has overcome significant early life challenges to become an elite para-swimmer with his sights set on the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

Dominic’s early life presented immense hurdles. Following non-accidental injuries as an infant, he faced severe health issues, including brain bleeds and multiple fractures. Doctors initially believed he might never walk or talk. Yet, against all odds, Dominic defied these predictions. His grandparents, who he calls Mum and Dad, provided extraordinary support, even attending school with him for two years to help manage severe separation anxiety. Later diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy affecting his right side, alongside brain injuries impacting his left, Dominic continued to navigate life with incredible courage.

His talent for swimming was discovered at a Cerebral Palsy Alliance camp. From that moment, Dominic dedicated himself to the sport, with his grandparents driving him an hour each way daily for training. This commitment has led to remarkable success, including 56 gold, 32 silver, and 18 bronze medals at club, regional, state, and national levels. He has competed in the World Para Series and qualified for the Paris Olympic Trials, a testament to his hard work and spirit.

Despite these incredible achievements, Dominic and his family recently faced new challenges. His grandfather’s heart attack led to financial strain, making it difficult to cover the travel and accommodation expenses essential for Dominic to continue competing at an elite level. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we are committed to supporting people like Dominic to build skills, confidence, and pathways to meaningful work and life goals. Our team in Hamilton is working with Dominic to explore opportunities and ensure his talent does not go to waste due to financial barriers.

Dominic’s dream of representing Australia at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with determination and community support. We are honoured to be part of his journey, helping to create opportunities and celebrate every step forward.
