Kat Finds Meaningful Work and Community Connection in Colac
When Kat joined are-able in February 2025, she faced significant barriers to employment, including chronic pain and mobility restrictions due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Living in a remote location with limited transport options, her journey required a tailored approach and persistent support from our team.
Our employment partner worked closely with Kat, organising appointments in accessible locations and providing transport to and from and interviews from her home in Birregurra. Despite initial setbacks, we continued to advocate for Kat, eventually connecting with Colac Community Hub INC. This new employer, impressed by Kat’s skills and our commitment, was open to exploring how they could accommodate her needs. A comprehensive occupational therapy assessment, facilitated through Job Access in September 2025 and finalised in February 2026, was crucial in identifying necessary workplace adjustments. With the employer’s patience and our ongoing support, including the purchase of ergonomic furniture and Kat’s NDIS-funded knee scooter, a safe and comfortable environment was created.
Kat now thrives in her administrative role at Colac Community Hub INC, contributing to vital community programs such as Learn Local Classes, NILS, and the L2P drivers program. Her role is diverse and impactful, allowing her to support numerous community groups. Even when V-Line upgrades temporarily disrupted her train travel, they stepped in to arrange taxi services, ensuring Kat could continue her work without interruption. This collaborative spirit, from her employer’s understanding to V-Line’s assistance, highlights the power of community support.
Since gaining employment, Kat’s life has transformed. She has built confidence, expanded her social network, and become more involved in her local community, including volunteering with the Birregurra CFA. Her journey is a testament to her resilience and the belief that with the right support, everyone can find meaningful work and become an invested member of their community. We are proud to have walked alongside Kat every step of the way.
