Axel finds his passion and a pathway to employment at Mildura’s BLK.mlk Specialty Coffee

Axel Ammaree Martin-Evans first connected with are-able in November 2024, during his final years of high school in Mildura. He continued to receive support from us throughout his Year 12, graduating in 2025. Axel joined our School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program with a clear goal: to build his skills and confidence for employment. Having studied cookery and earned a certificate in patisserie at school, Axel was eager to find an opportunity to apply his culinary talents in a real-world setting.

His journey began with four weeks of work experience at the Cheesecake Shop, where he gained valuable insights into customer service and kitchen duties.

More recently, Axel completed two weeks of work experience at BLK.mlk Specialty Coffee, a local hotspot in Mildura. Under the supportive guidance of new owners Paddy Keogh and Zac Mcdonald, Axel thrived. Paddy and Zac, who recently took over the cafe, have transformed it into a modern, welcoming space known for great coffee and delicious food. They were so impressed with Axel’s dedication and skills that, at the end of his work experience, they offered him paid employment. Understanding Axel’s commitment to his SuniTAFE course, Paddy and Zac have shown remarkable flexibility, allowing him to balance his work with his studies.

This opportunity has had a significant impact on Axel’s life. He enjoys the hands-on experience of a busy cafe kitchen, putting his skills to the test by baking banana breads, muffins, and gluten-free brownies, alongside helping with cleaning and dishes. The role has given him something positive to look forward to each week, boosting his confidence in the workplace and providing him with the chance to earn his own money, fostering greater independence. As our Senior NDIS Mentor, Ashley Chambers, shared, “Axel has been very engaged in the program and seeing him grow and show massive progress towards his goals has been so rewarding for him and us, as we get to see his transition from school to work.”

We are incredibly proud to support people like Axel in building skills, confidence, and pathways to meaningful work.
