Finding Confidence and Purpose: A Transition to Work Success Story
When a 22-year-old participant from Portland joined are-able’s Transition to Work (TTW) program late last year, he wasn’t sure where life was headed. Struggling with anxiety and low confidence, he found it difficult to imagine a future in the workforce. But his willingness to give the program a go marked the beginning of a remarkable turnaround.
With the steady support of his Employment Mentor, Lainie Middleton, and the TTW team, he began developing his skills, setting goals, and slowly rebuilding his confidence. After securing a role through are-able, he was unexpectedly let go, but instead of giving up, he chose to stay focused and keep showing up for himself. That resilience became his superpower.
Today, he’s proudly working full-time with Kalm Industries as a gardener, travelling between Portland, Heywood, and Dartmoor to maintain the gardens of elderly clients. From mowing and weeding to lending a friendly ear, his work brings joy not just to clients’ homes but to their lives.
His employer has already been impressed within weeks of starting, one of the company’s toughest clients called to praise his work ethic and attitude. His boss shared that receiving such positive feedback is rare, making the recognition all the more special.
Beyond the job itself, this opportunity has brought big personal change. Recently engaged, he’s now financially independent and searching for his own place after previously living with a friend. The stability and pride that come with full-time work have opened new doors for his future.
“I am extremely proud of this participant’s resilience and determination. Through all the ups and downs, he has always stayed positive, committed, and grateful. It has been an absolute pleasure assisting him in his employment journey,” said Lainie Middleton, Employment Mentor.
are-able is currently working with the employer to provide a Wage Subsidy, supporting a long-term and successful partnership.
This story is a testament to what’s possible when persistence meets opportunity, and how belief, support, and the right connection can transform a life.
