From Uncertainty to Independence: Lucia’s Journey to Work and a Driver’s Licence
Lucia, a 21-year-old from Portland, began her journey with are-able facing significant barriers.
With no prior work experience, limited education, and uncertainty about her career path, she was looking for guidance to find meaningful employment. We understood her challenges and worked closely with her to build a personalised pathway towards her goals, focusing on building both skills and confidence.
Our team provided comprehensive support, starting with connecting Lucia to the L2P program, which was crucial for her to gain essential driving skills and independence. To build practical experience and confidence in a supportive environment, we facilitated a volunteer placement for her at a local op shop. Throughout this time, our mentors provided ongoing assistance, including comprehensive interview preparation, conducting mock interviews, and offering tailored feedback. Lucia also actively attended retail and hospitality information sessions, consistently taking on board all suggestions provided by her mentor. Her commitment and willingness to embrace every opportunity were truly inspiring.
Her dedication and hard work paid off. Lucia successfully secured employment at a local cafe, where she is now thriving as a cafe all-rounder. This role has not only provided her with a steady income but has also given her a newfound sense of purpose and belonging within her community. In a significant step towards greater independence, Lucia also successfully obtained her P-plate driver’s licence. This means she no longer relies on others for transport, giving her the freedom to travel and save money towards her dream of having her own place. Our Business Development Officer maintains contact with her employer, ensuring a successful and happy working relationship.
Lainie Middleton, Lucia’s Youth Employment Mentor, shared her pride, saying, “I am beyond proud of Lucia, she is really a prime example of if you put your mind to something, you can do it.” We are incredibly proud of Lucia’s achievements and the profound positive impact this has had on her life. Her story is a wonderful example of how local support creates real impact, helping people build skills, confidence, and pathways to meaningful work. Together, we create opportunity for individuals to thrive and build inclusive communities.
We are here to support more people like Lucia on their journey to employment and independence.
