Nigretta of Hamilton celebrates 50 years of supported employment

On 21 November, Nigretta of Hamilton marked 50 years of creating meaningful employment and community connection for people with disability in Hamilton.

What began in 1975 as a small sheltered workshop has grown into a well-known local social enterprise, now operating under the are-able Social Enterprises umbrella. Over five decades, Nigretta has provided safe, purposeful work, helping hundreds of people build skills, confidence and long-term community connections.

The 50-year celebration brought together supported employees, their families, past and present team members, and community partners. Guests reflected on Nigretta’s journey and the impact it has had on people’s lives. Supported employees spoke with pride about their work and their contribution to the products Nigretta is known for.

Today, Nigretta of Hamilton is best recognised for its handcrafted wooden chopping and serving boards, timber platters and pizza paddles – all shaped, crafted and sanded on site by the Nigretta team. The workshop also offers customised engraving, creating unique gifts for both domestic and commercial customers. Alongside woodworking, Nigretta provides employment opportunities in other areas such as eWaste recycling, sorting and packing.

As a supported employment service, Nigretta offers more than just a job. Employees work in a safe, social and inclusive environment, with access to supervision, training and ongoing encouragement. Participants are supported to learn new skills, meet new people, connect with the local community and grow their confidence at their own pace.

Reaching 50 years is a testament to the dedication of supported employees, staff, families and community partners who have backed Nigretta over the decades. It also highlights the ongoing importance of supported employment in regional communities like Hamilton.
