Building Confidence and Leading by Example: Aidan’s Story

Building Confidence and Leading by Example: Aidan’s Story

When Aidan Sanders joined are-able’s Finding and Keeping a Job – School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program in late 2022, he was navigating that tricky transition from school to adulthood while managing the challenges that come with living with disability. From the start, Aidan stood out for his determination, empathy, and natural leadership.

In 2023, Aidan was elected Senior School Captain at Kalianna School Bendigo, a special development school, where he campaigned on a simple but powerful message, that every student deserves a voice. With encouragement and practical support from are-able, Aidan prepared his campaign, speeches, and leadership goals, stepping confidently into a role that reflected his passion for advocacy and inclusion.

Alongside his school commitments, Aidan volunteered at local community events and continued working closely with his are-able consultant to explore future career options. Through tailored, one-on-one support, Aidan developed his confidence, communication skills, and job readiness. Together, they worked on interview preparation, volunteering opportunities, and a plan for life after school that aligned with his long-term goals.

After graduating, Aidan’s leadership journey continued. In 2024, he successfully applied for the City of Greater Bendigo Youth Council, earning his place after an interview with the Mayor, a proud moment that reflected his growing voice as a young leader with disability. Throughout the year, Aidan represented young people with disability, advocating for inclusion, mental health awareness, and better access to support services.

While working towards his long-term career goals, Aidan also gained hands-on experience through opportunities arranged by are-able, including work experience placements at the Bendigo Discovery Centre and the Golden Dragon Museum. These experiences helped him develop his administrative and communication skills, expand his community connections, and build the foundation for future study and employment.

By August 2025, Aidan’s leadership journey reached new heights when he was selected to attend the National Leadership Forum in Canberra, a prestigious national program bringing together emerging young leaders from across Australia. The Forum has previously hosted some of the country’s most influential figures, including former Prime Ministers Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, and John Howard, alongside leaders such as Gail Kelly, Cate Blanchett, and Adam Gilchrist.

“For the first time in ages, I was able to genuinely have fun, be myself, and connect with others through leadership,” Aidan said. “I want to show other young people with disability that they can have a voice and take part in their community. The support I’ve had from are-able has opened doors I never thought possible, from becoming a school captain, to joining the Youth Council, to representing Bendigo in Canberra.”

Aidan’s story is a powerful example of what’s possible when young people are supported to build confidence, pursue their passions, and believe in their own potential.
