Learning from Lived Experience: Certificate III Individual Support Students Inspired by Brett’s Story
Last week, are-able’s Certificate III in Individual Support students had the privilege of hearing from local community member Brett, who generously shared his lived experience and insights to help prepare them for their future roles as disability support workers.
Brett spoke openly about his life living with disabilities, explaining how the NDIS has given him greater independence, choice, and control. He described the challenges of navigating life without sight and with mobility impairments, while also showing how his positive outlook helps him live life to the fullest.
He also shared stories from his travels, including trips to America and Darwin, along with his active involvement in his local community. Brett hosts a weekly radio program on 3RPC, proudly participates in Anzac Day marches wearing his father’s wartime medals, engages with his local bird club, and never misses his annual trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
For the students, Brett’s words were both inspiring and practical. He highlighted what he values most in a support worker: a positive attitude, a good sense of humour, and a deep understanding of his needs to support his empowerment and independence.
Trainer Suzanne said, “Hearing from Brett gave our students a unique perspective that you can’t get from a textbook. His honesty, humour and lived experience really helped our students understand the impact they can have as future support workers. It was an incredibly valuable learning opportunity.”
