Nathan’s Path to Employment Success through SLES
Nathan, a 21-year-old from Mildura, has been making remarkable progress since joining the School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program in July 2024. Diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, Nathan has a keen interest in working in the café industry, particularly in making coffee—a passion he’s been able to develop through the support of Senior Employment Preparation & Engagement Consultant Ashley Chambers and the SLES café training trolley.
While Nathan had learned coffee-making skills in school, it had been a few years since he last worked with an actual coffee machine. Thanks to the SLES program, he now has the opportunity to hone his barista skills every Friday morning. Nathan boots up the coffee machine in the SLES office and opens the café for are-able staff, taking their orders and writing them on their coffee cups. Not only does he prepare their coffee, but he is also gaining valuable experience in cash handling, with a small charge for each order teaching him essential financial skills.
“As soon as Nathan gets behind the coffee machine, his confidence is electric; he just gets into the zone and starts making coffee. It gives him a good distraction, and he’s building valuable skills while spoiling staff with delicious beverages,” says Ashley Chambers, Senior Employment Preparation & Engagement Consultant.
Each Friday has become a day that both Nathan and the staff eagerly anticipate. Nathan takes pride in making their coffees, and after cleaning up his coffee station, he continues to work on building the skills necessary to achieve his employment goals.
Nathan’s journey is an inspiring example of how the SLES program helps individuals develop practical, on-the-job skills while nurturing their passions. His story also highlights the importance of consistent support, as he works toward securing future employment in the café industry.
